Why a Pre-Owned BMW Could Be the Safest Vehicle for Your Teenager
BMW is the Ultimate Driving Machine, and part of its description is extraordinary attention to safety. That’s why three pre-owned BMW models are among the entries on the “Safe Vehicles for Teenagers” list. That list is issued annually, by Consumer Reports, the respected, independent consumer reviewing organization, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an auto insurance rating organization.
BMW’s three Teen Vehicle Safety List qualifiers included as Good Choices the 2014-21 BMW 2 series in the midsized cars category and the 2016 or newer BMW X1 in the small SUV category. The BMW X2 (2019 and newer) was named a Best Choice in the small SUV category.
It makes plenty of sense that BMW’s superb engineering and handling would lead to these qualifying vehicles, but there are many criteria that “Safe for Teens” vehicles had to meet:
- Average or better scores in emergency and routine-handling tests, as well as braking tests.
- Good usability and less distracting secondary controls and displays.
- Highest ratings when new on five IIHS tests, including three crash tests, roof crush-resistance test and an evaluation of how well the head restraints actually control head movement in a crash.
Some of the disqualifiers included vehicle weight (too heavy or too light) and too much power related to the size of the vehicle.
With increasing road congestion and some of the longer distances and varied driving conditions young drivers may experience, parents need all the help they can get when selecting just the right set of wheels for their teen. This annual list of “Safest Vehicles for Teenagers” can help provide a sensible road map as they navigate the many choices available. Plus, our client advisors are always here to help.
(And it goes without saying – though we will anyway – that driving a BMW will help make your teenager the envy of his or her friends.)
