BMW’s 5 Series Goes Electric with the i5 eDrive40 and i5M60 xDrive | Schomp BMW

Published on May 25, 2023 by Schomp BMW

BMW’s plans to electrify its entire lineup is about to make a huge leap with the debut of the 2024 BMW i5. We’re very excited that it will be available for pre-order on May 24th, and it is scheduled to appear at Schomp BMW in the fall.

The 2024 BMW i5 comes in two versions, a 335-hp (250 kW) i5 eDrive40 with rear-wheel drive and the 590-hp (440 kW) i5 M60 xDrive all-wheel drive. Both have double-wishbone front and five-link rear axle architecture, which they share with the gas-powered BMW 5 Series. And while they have bulky batteries rather than gas engines, the batteries are situated in such a way that they don’t really reduce passenger space. BMW says their EPA estimated range should be 290 miles for the eDrive40 and 260 miles for the M60 xDrive.

The automotive reviewers who recently were offered test drives have been very complimentary:

WhatCar.com said, “The i5 makes a strong first impression … In fact, it’ll give the Mercedes EQE plenty to worry about. Autoblog.com said, “Even the entry-level eDrive40 takes off with a vengeance and serves up plenty of torque on the way to triple-digit velocities. The M60 model is downright furious.” Hotcars.com said, “The 2024 BMW i5 Sedan’s extensive range of automated driving and parking features will raise the bar in its class. The manufacturer applies intelligent technology to achieve a refined future driving experience.” CarandDriver.com said, “We … came away impressed with its athleticism and satisfied with its on-board technology features.”

The cabin will feature the level of luxury and comfort that drivers have come to expect in The Ultimate Driving Machine with superb fit and finish and rich texture. They will also be wowed by some of the newer technology. BMW’s iDrive 8.5 software underpins the infotainment system and the entire dashboard looks like one long curve extending from the driver’s side to the passenger’s side. The Highway Assistant allows a driver to use adaptive cruise control hands-free. A simple hand swipe controls air vents, and drivers can change lanes by simply turning their head to look at the side mirrors, and the car will respond automatically when it’s safe.

Outside, the BMW i5 appears to bring back the older version of the signature kidney-shaped grille. There is a new headlight/running light configuration and a restyled rear end.

Learn more about the 2024 BMW i5, and beginning on May 24th,  pre-order what we predict will be one of the biggest automotive hits of the year.
