Attractive to Drivers, but Not to Thieves: The 2025 BMW iX
It’s a little-known fact that electric vehicles are less attractive to thieves. That’s why Schomp BMW is pleased to see that our wonderful 2025 BMW iX all-electric, midsize SUV 4-wheel drive is on a recently released Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute (IIHS-HLDI) list of “Least-Stolen Vehicles.”
Why include theft in your calculations when shopping for a new vehicle? There are some pretty compelling reasons to consider it:
- With 430.0 stolen vehicles per 100,000 people, Colorado was #3 nationally in auto thefts per 100,000 people.
- That was 25,378 stolen vehicles in 2024
- Overall vehicle thefts are down in 2023-24, but they are still high enough to be concerning, especially here in Colorado.
EVs Have Anti-Theft Advantages
The auto experts at TopSpeed.com make some interesting point for why EVs are less vulnerable to theft, including advanced remote capabilities, constant monitoring capabilities and the fact that vehicles stolen in the U.S. are often shipped abroad for resale; apparently the destination countries aren’t that interested in EVs. Good news for EV owners! Sadly, the BMW X7 landed on the list of most-stolen vehicles – guess we shouldn’t be surprised that such a gorgeous, luxurious and capable large SUV (in company with several other large SUVs and pickups) is desirable not just here in Colorado but elsewhere in the world.
The Where and When of Vehicle Theft
Location-location-location! People who have to park on streets or in parking lots and garages are more vulnerable to vehicle theft; thieves tend to go where the greatest opportunities lie. They like cities – Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Colorado Springs and Westminster having the highest theft rates.
Thieves also like to operate most under cover of darkness, focusing their lawless activities between the hours of 4 p.m., (getting dark in winter) and 4 a.m. (before the sun rises).
Interestingly, most stolen vehicles are recovered – 86%, according to the Colorado Auto Theft Authority. That’s higher than the national average. But if your vehicle is stolen and you get it back it probably will need extensive repairs and/or cleaning and may have been stripped for parts (think: catalytic converters).
Beat the Thieves
Act on some theft-prevention steps:
- Park in well-lit areas if you must park anywhere but your own garage.
- Always lock your vehicle.
- Keep valuables hidden.
- Don’t leave your BMW running unattended.
- Take advantage of anti-theft measures such as alarms, flashing lights, etc.
- Use a vehicle tracker – if not your vehicles GPS, then your phone’s “Find My” or similar app.
Electric vehicles have become more popular than ever in Colorado – they’re environmentally friendly and have greater range than ever. That the 2025 BMW iXs are among the least-stolen vehicles, only adds to their attractiveness. Want to learn more?
