Why the BMW iX3 Won World Car of the Year and EV of the Year

What’s better than winning one award? Winning two! That’s just what BMW did earlier this month, winning both the 2026 World Car of the Year and also World Electric Vehicle of the Year for the 2026 BMW iX3 all-electric vehicle (EV). The award was announced at the New York Auto Show.

This win, based on a vote of a jury of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, is an acknowledgement that electric vehicles – embodied in the 2026 BMW iX3 50 iDrive – are now part of the personal transportation mainstream. The World Car of the Year Awards were launched 22 years ago, and BMW has earned nine earlier titles.

To win the overall 2026 World Car of the Year award, the first Neue Klasse iX3 beat out the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf, and beat the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Nissan Leaf to win World Electric Vehicle of the Year.

Winning Ways

The 2026 BMW iX3 50’s World Car of the Year win was based on extensive test drives. It excelled in performance, driving dynamics and technological superiority. It’s powerful, goes far on a single charge and recharges quickly. Coupled with myriad standard features, when the iX3 50 xDrive hits the Schomp BMW showroom this summer, it’s sure to dazzle. And with gasoline prices soaring, it’s a great alternative to gas-powered vehicles (although we have many wonderful gas-powered BMWs, too!). Here are some of the highlights:

  • Estimated range of up to 400 miles facilitated by BMW EfficientDynamics
  • Estimated 463 hp – zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds!
  • 21 minutes 10-to-80% charging time with DC Fast Charger
  • New “Heart of Joy” central control unit that integrates drivetrain, braking and recuperation.
  • Panoramic Vision iDrive display and control system that responds to touch or voice control through the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant – just say “Hey BMW” to access nav, infotainment and vehicle controls.
  • Standard Driving Assistant Plus with features like Distance Control, Steering Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection and Active Park  Distance Control.
  • Spacious trunk and frunk.
  • BMW design-forward styling and comfort.

A Technological “Quantum Leap Forward”

“The BMW iX3 marks the beginning of a new era at BMW – in terms of design language, range, charging capacity as well as driver assistance – and BMW Panoramic iDrive. Above all, the BMW iX3 represents the next generation of Sheer Driving Pleasure powered by the Heart of Joy. The innovations from the Neue Klasse will benefit our entire product portfolio,” according to Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW.
