Here Is How the Experts Rate New BMWs on Quality

Published on Oct 2, 2026 by Schomp BMW

BMW made an outstanding showing in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, with both cars and SUVs named as standouts in their respective classes. Here’s the top line:

  • The BMW 2 Series was the winner in the Small Premium Car class.
  • The BMW X2 took the top spot in the Small Premium SUV category.
  • The BMW 5 Series won in the Upper Midsize Premium Car group.
  • The BMW X6 triumphed among Upper Midsize Premium SUVs.
  • The BMW X7 won among Large Premium SUVs.
  • The BMW 8 Series beat all comers in the Large Premium Car class.

What Does This Mean?

For 40 years, J.D. Power has surveyed responses from new-car buyers and lessors on how well their vehicles served them after 90 days of ownership. This year’s responses came from 78,514 owners based on 227 “Voice of the Customer” questions about their experiences in 10 different categories:

  • Infotainment
  • Features
  • Controls and displays
  • Exterior: driving assistance
  • Interior
  • Seats
  • Powertrain
  • Driving experience
  • Climate
  • Unspecified

It also included repair visit data coming from “real-world events reported to franchised new-vehicle dealers. Manufacturers can use the information collected in the survey to identify and correct quality issues.
This year’s IQS results are worth celebrating because they showed that initial quality has improved sharply. “This is the best year-over-year improvement in reported problems since 1997 and the fourth-best performance in the 40-year history of IQS,” according to a J.D. Power news release. Particularly noted were improvements in cup holders – more accessible location and capacity to hold different sizes of containers; driving assistance alerts, EV range, road noise and body panel fit and finish.

What Needs Attention

New owners were not enthusiastic about the distractions that touchscreens present; driver assistance alerts were also mentioned.
“As more technology is introduced into vehicles, keeping the experience simple matters more than ever,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at JD Power. “The biggest gains in quality come from features that are easy to use—simple controls, less-intrusive driver assistance and software that works the way customers expect. When technology becomes too complicated, the likelihood of customers experiencing a problem rises considerably.”
We were very proud that BMW continues to excel at addressing and solving problems that consumers note. Schomp BMW works hard to make sure that all new vehicle owners understand the best way to use their vehicles in as safe and enjoyable way possible.
