BMW Races into the Electric Future with the BMW iX3
Electric mobility is the future of automotive and BMW is again leading the way with a revolutionary new vehicle, the 2026 BMW iX3. BMW says this new SUV represents a “transformative leap in design language, technology and performance,” that will eventually extend across its lineup. The initial model – the compact, 5-passenger iX3 50 xDrive – is coming to our dealership next summer!
Key to this “Neue Klasse” model is sixth-generation eDrive technology featuring a cylindrical-cell, high-voltage battery able to add 200+ miles of range with just 10 minutes time on a peak 400 kW charger. Total driving range on a charge is estimated at more than 400 miles. It as power to spare with 463 horsepower and 476 lm-feet of torque offered by two electric motors. Hit the gas – um, what’s the EV equivalent? – and rocket 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph.
Another BMW innovation are four “superbrains” working together, including the revolutionary “Heart of Joy” driving dynamics superbrain giving the vehicle faster reactions and (even) better handling, faster shifting, and braking handled almost entirely with regenerative power. Other superbrains are responsible for driver assist functions, infotainment and comfort functions.
The BMW iX3 is BMW’s first production model with BMW Panoramic iDrive. This exciting technology turns the lower part of the windshield into a screen, projecting information from one side to the other – a total of 43 inches. It puts important driving information where the driver can see it and is customizable with drag-and-drop widgets. Pair that with a 17.9-inch touchscreen that controls the latest BMW infotainment software.
Gone are the iDrive controller, replaced by haptic controls on the steering wheel, and the controversial large dual-kidney grille, replaced by a much-smaller version echoing previous grilles.
Initial reviews from auto publications since the 2026 BMW iX3 debuted at this month’s Munich Auto Show have been enthusiastic. Inside EVs said “Forget what you know about BMW’s electric vehicles. Sure, those have been excellent … But this is different. It’s something new altogether. And however impressive the i4 and the rest have been, what’s coming next ups the ante.”
MotorTrend said, “ This is the future of BMW, and the 2027 iX3 electric SUV is in fact all new and all important.
And Edmunds summed it up neatly, “This SUV will bring its all-electric efforts into the future with a clean-sheet design and a barrage of fresh technology that will expand throughout the BMW lineup. In other words, this is a really big deal.”
