When Christopher Walken proclaims BMW “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” he’s not just parroting automotive propaganda. According to Consumer Reports, BMW is its top-ranked brand among the 34 it tested in its annual rankings.
Each year, Consumer Reports independently purchases vehicles from dealerships to conduct its extensive testing and then ranks them based on:
Road-test scores – based on more than 50 tests run in driving situations. Predicted reliability – based on problems reported by CR members in 20 possible trouble areas Owner satisfaction data – based on opinions given by CR members about whether they’d buy another BMW if given the chance. Safety – based on assessments of available crash-test results and what crash-prevention systems are standard equipment.
In Consumer Reports’ 2024 tests, BMW repeated as the leading brand – luxury or mainstream – for a second year. BMW scored an 82 out of 100 possible points in the rankings. Learn more about how CR tests vehicles.
Consumer Reports particularly highlighted BMW’s excellent road-test scores and very good predicted reliability. It’s interesting and imp
ortant to note that Consumer Reports tested 12 models and recommends all 12, including the four “Green Choices” (among the top 20% of EPA-rated vehicles with the cleanest emissions).
Consumer Reports particularly singled out the BMW X5 and X5 PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) as its top Luxury SUV, singling out its “whisper-quiet cabin,” “balanced suspension,” “quick acceleration” from both the gas-powered turbo six and the PHEV (“the real ace”). “Exquisite in almost every detail, the X5 sets a high standard.”
